Casa Mirarcos Traditional Portuguese Food - Heritage Branding
An elegant seal-style emblem drawing inspiration from Porto’s iconic wrought-iron balconies and traditional tilework - in Navy Blue and Champagne Gold for an authentic restaurant in the historic Miragaia district on the banks of the Douro.
The Client
Casa Mirarcos is an authentic restaurant and café nestled in the historic Miragaia district of Porto. Situated along the riverside, the establishment serves as a culinary bridge between the city’s ancient traditions and the vibrant energy of modern tourism. The brand identity needed to capture the spirit of “Miragaia”, a place of narrow alleys, picturesque houses, and the timeless flow of the Douro River.
The Design
I designed an elegant, seal-style emblem that draws inspiration from the local architecture. The ornate flourishes flanking the brand name pay homage to Porto’s iconic wrought-iron balconies and traditional tilework. The circular seal carries the descriptor “Traditional Portuguese Food” in gold and blue, naming the kitchen at a glance. The Navy Blue and Champagne Gold palette was selected to reflect the Douro (where “Ouro” means gold) river heritage of the area and the warmth of Portuguese hospitality. A restrained two-colour palette ages gracefully; I explain why in my guide to choosing brand colours.
The emblem was drawn in a set of variations, gold on solid navy, gold and blue on cream, and a version placed over a subtle ornamental pattern, so the seal stays legible from facade signage down to menu size.
The Result
The seal emblem brings an air of heritage and authenticity to Casa Mirarcos that resonates with both local regulars and visiting tourists. Menus are presented on navy leather clipboards finished with the golden logo, the facade carries signage and a vertical banner, and the emblem appears as wall decoration in the dining room and behind the café counter. Cream posters with ornamental Portuguese detailing extend the system into print, and a brand identity board records the variations, signage and colour palette to keep future applications consistent. From the daytime facade to the evening signage above diners outside, the brand feels like a natural extension of the Miragaia streetscape, rooted in the neighbourhood it calls home.
