A brand becomes more meaningful when people can experience it. For Four Sparrows Mahjong, that means carrying the club’s personality from its visual identity into a website where visitors can discover the space and plan their first visit.

Beth Varian of Webmaster For Hire recently shared an article about building the Four Sparrows website, kindly crediting my work on the brand and base website design. I wanted to return that recognition and highlight her contribution to the project.

The identity behind Four Sparrows

Four Sparrows is a boutique mahjong social club in Mizner Park, Boca Raton, Florida. My brand identity work for the club brings together a sparrow motif, botanical details, classic typography, and a palette of sage green, dusty pink, ivory, and gold. The intention was to create an identity that feels welcoming and refined, with enough flexibility to work across stationery, signage, club materials, and the website.

Beth’s contribution to the website

Taking that visual direction into a working website required decisions about how the business would operate. Beth’s Four Sparrows project overview describes Webmaster For Hire’s work on platform research, page structure, content implementation, development, and layout adjustments as the project evolved.

That contribution deserves recognition. A designer can establish the visual language, but each page still needs to help someone make a decision. A first-time visitor might want to understand which lesson suits them. A regular player might want to reserve a seat. Someone considering membership needs to find the relevant information without losing their way.

From my perspective as a brand identity designer, those moments are part of the brand experience. A welcoming identity should be supported by clear language and useful navigation. The care expressed through typography and colour should continue into the way a person moves through the site.

Connecting design with the way a business works

One point in Beth’s article particularly resonates with me: choosing the booking platform early. She explains how the club’s requirements for online bookings and in-person operations shaped the technical decisions. For designers, that is a useful reminder to understand the systems behind a website before committing to detailed page designs.

It also reinforces how I think about collaboration. Visual design and development bring different kinds of knowledge to the same project. Making room for both helps connect the character of a business with the practical needs of its customers.

Thank you, Beth
